Celebrating Abbeyfield Week 2023

Celebrating Abbeyfield Week 2023

What is Abbeyfield Week?

Celebrated each year in June, Abbeyfield Week provides an opportunity for our houses to open their doors and welcome in new members of the local community, showcasing how fulfilling our houses are as places to live. This year, Abbeyfield Week coincided with Loneliness Awareness Week, a campaign run by The Marmalade Trust to encourage conversations about loneliness.

Across the Abbeyfield South Downs region, we held events and activities to bring people together, to get together and have fun. We hold regular opportunities for tenants to build friendships and stay connected, both with each other and with organisations in our local communities.

Summer BBQ

Our main event was a fantastic BBQ, with plenty of sunshine, delicious food, and excellent music from Just George. There may even have been dancing, including Staying Alive by the Bee Gees and the Macarena. Our team Sharon, Linda, Julie, and Zoe couldn’t resist!

Men’s Well-being Afternoon

The week also coincided with Men’s Heath Week. This aims to raise awareness about the health challenges faced by men and promote strategies for better physical and emotional well-being.

So, we decided to round off Abbeyfield Week at Holdenhurst with a well-being afternoon for the men. We were delighted to have Tommy come along to have an informal chat on health and nutrition, followed by a mini session on chair yoga and meditation.

We retreated to the lounge for healthy refreshments, and a couple of the men even had a cheeky little foot massage. The afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Time for Coffee… and welcome to Betsy!

We strive to give lots of opportunities for connection; some tenants like to form clubs or join coffee mornings, while others are content with a cheery hello from neighbours and staff. You can relax with a newspaper in the lounge or invite loved ones to the cafe for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Here are some of our ladies enjoying an afternoon coffee and catch-up. Plus, welcome to our newest addition to Holdenhurst, the lovely Betsy. She is Sandra, our tenant’s new puppy and is settling in nicely – we all want a cuddle!
